What is "CRI Sofdec"?

 CRI Sofdec is a very high quality movie system designed for games.   It allows you to easily integrate simple or complex cinematic sequences directly into your game engine, pushing your game hardware to the limit.

Multi-Stream/Seamless Playback
 Multiple movie streams can be played back asynchronously using the ADX multi-stream function. 
Also, Sofdec can perform playback seamlessly, which makes multi-streams behave as if they were a single stream. Seamless branch playback and seamless loop playback are also supported. 

Superimposing Game Onto Movie
 Sofdec enables the real-time integration of your movie into your game engine. 
Various visual effects and alpha channel movies can be treated as three-dimensional textures and integrated directly into your game. 

Video/Audio Specification
 

Video Stream Sofdec Video, MPEG-1/MPEG-2 Video
Frame Rate 60fps, 30fps, 24fps, etc... (varies according to image size or bitrate)
Image Size Arbitrary by 16×16 pixel unit (normally 640x480 pixel)
Bitrate Arbitrary in a certain range (normally approx. 6Mbps )
Output Image Full color (24 bit, 16 million color, YCC4:2:0 format)
Audio System ADX audio(compression rate is about 1/4)
Output Audio Max 48 kHz, 16 bit, stereo/mono

Features

(1) Software Decoder
CRI Sofdec has a extremely optimized software decorder and performs a high quality movie playback requiring no dedicated hardware. 
Bitrate and image sizes can be specified freely within a certain range so that it can respond flexibly to variety of uses or needs. 
CRI Sofdec also supports high definition movie playback.

(2) High Quality Audio Playback
Using ADX codec, audio can be played back in CD quality (48kHz / 44.1 kHz, 16 bit, stereo). 

(3) Cooperation with CRI ADX
ADX and Sofdec are based on common software modules so that they can be compatible with each other.  It also allows simultaneous playback via ADX audio output while Sofdec is in use.

(4) Multi-Stream Playback
Using the multi-stream function of ADX, multiple movie streams can be played back asynchronously.

(5) Seamless Playback
Multiple movie streams can be played back seamlessly, both video and audio, without artifacts from looping.  Seamless branch playback, switching from one stream to another depending on the user's choice, and seamless loop playback, repeating the same movie stream, are possible.

(6) Sofdec F/X

Texture Movie
Movie can be played back on polygons as a texture.  For example, you can projecting a picture onto a big screen within a stadium. 

Visual Effect Movie
Visual effects such as explosion, fire, smoke and lightning that have been hard to render in real time can now be easily displayed in a movie. 

Alpha Movie / Z Movie
Movie data itself can contain alpha channel information or a Z-depth value.  Alpha composition of the game screen and a movie allows you to create highly realistic effects. 
 

(7) Free Encoding Tools
 The Sofdec video encoder, audio encoder, multiplexer, and other types of converters are provided free of charge to help you create Sofdec files.
